New bell schedule for 2014-15 school year
Dear College Park Parents and Students,

As you may have heard by now, the bell schedule for College Park during the 2014-2015 school year will be a traditional six-period day. All school days will have the same class schedule with school starting at 7:50am and ending at 2:40pm. (Please click here to download the bell schedule for next year.) The only exception to the start and end times will be final exam days at the end of each semester.

As per the MDUSD teacher's union contract, the bell schedule for any MDUSD school is determined by the teachers at each site every 1-2 years. This has been a part of the MDUSD contract for many years. Thus, the College Park teachers have ongoing meetings, discuss research, and visit other schools to determine which schedule will help CPHS students be successful. For example, this past year a committee of CP teachers presented a total of nine different bell schedules to staff for discussion. The options were narrowed before a final vote against the traditional six-period day. Through the democratic secret ballot process as described in the union contract, the block-period schedule did not have the required super majority of the votes needed to be approved. Thus, the schedule will be the traditional six-period day.

The parent leaders at CPHS have passed along parent and student concerns about this schedule change to teachers and administrators. We thank you for your feedback. Many concerns are based on students' current experience with our Monday schedule or experiences with a six-period day at middle school. Some students are concerned that their grades will drop and they will not be successful in this type of traditional schedule. Please be assured that as a community, we are committed to finding ways for every student to learn. We know that people learn in different ways just as people teach in different ways. A change in schedule will require an adjustment, but it will not change our goals as a school.

To address some of your concerns we offer the following:
  1. Homework The amount of homework assigned is according to district policy, regardless of the school schedule. MDUSD District Policy BP 6154 for high schools states: Total homework assignments for all combined classes should have an estimated completion time of 120-180 minutes per night. Advanced courses may require additional time.

Dividing these numbers by 6 classes per day means between 20-30 minutes per class per day. We will need to make sure students and teachers communicate to ensure the homework district policy is being followed and students are learning while not being overwhelmed.
  2. Content Covered Teachers will be presenting fewer new topics each day because they will see students every day.
  3. Testing Some tests will need to be rewritten or broken up over the course of two days to accommodate the standard period. Please note that 45-55 minute tests are standard for thousands of schools.
You may be interested to know that a traditional six-period day is used by about two-thirds of schools in the United States. (See Center for Public Education data at the link below.) A traditional schedule is not something unknown and many current College Park teachers have taught very successfully in a six-period day. There are pros and cons to all schedules and in fact there are many different types of schedules. (If you'd like to read about some of the research
concerning schedules, please click here to go to the Center for Public Education).

Next year we will be starting the schedule discussion process over again and we will need students and parents to be on separate advisory committees. Although the student and parent committees are not allowed a vote in the process (the contract stipulates that teachers are the only voting members), your concerns and recommendations will be taken forward and presented to the staff for consideration. If you would like to be a part of this process, please watch for an announcement in the Falcon Flyer at the beginning of the school year. Alternatively, you may contact Mr. Gengler at genglerp@mdusd.com.

We are looking forward to seeing you next year and appreciate your patience as we continue to look for ways to help all students learn.

Paul Gengler, Principal
College Park Teachers and Administration
