Reminders for UC/CSU apps

Seniors: UC and CSU apps are due Sun., Nov. 30. DO NOT WAIT until the last day to apply! The internet has been known to go down and computers have been known to die!

Remember, even though you have self-reported your ACT and/or SAT scores you still have to send them officially from ACT or CollegeBoard.

If you send an ACT or SAT score to one of the UCs to which you are applying, all the UCs to which you apply will have access to your scores.
If you send your SAT scores to code 3594 (CSUmentor at Long Beach), all the CSUs will have access to them.
If you send your ACT score to one CSU campus, you can then go back to csumentor.edu and use Manage My ACT Scores to make your scores available to all CSU campuses.

It is not necessary for your scores to arrive before November 30. Aim to send your scores by mid-December at the latest.
If you are applying to out-of-state or private colleges send your test scores around the same time as you apply. It takes at least 2 weeks between paying for the scores to be sent and the scores actually arriving at your colleges.

Poetry Out Loud on Dec. 4
The College Park Poetry Out Loud competition will be held Thurs., Dec. 4 after school in the library.

Participation helps students master public speaking skills, build self-confidence and learn about our literary heritage.  Prizes will be given for first, second and third place. The winner will be given the opportunity to compete at the county competition in February.

For more information please see Mrs. Shumate in the library on Wednesday or Thursday. If you plan on participating, please leave her your name and email address. All participants should have their poems selected before Thanksgiving break.

Support Instrumental Music with a day out in Walnut Creek on Dec. 4
Enjoy a day out in our neighboring city to the south and support the CP Instrumental Music program at the same time.

Thurs., Dec. 4 is the day to shop at Barnes & Noble, WC using this voucher to donate part of your purchase price to the Instrumental Music Boosters. You can also shop online at bn.com/bookfairs using our bookfair ID: 11485117.

Then have pizza at California Pizza Kitchen using this voucher and dessert at Cream (just tell the cashier you're supporting CP Instrumental Music Boosters).

Don't head home yet! At 7:00pm the CP Jazz Ensemble is playing a joint concert with the Las Lomas Jazz Band at Las Lomas High School. (And the Jazz Ensemble is going to do such a great job, you might as well plan on celebrating with some more ice cream!)

Bus list for Senior Breakfast posted
The bus list for Senior Breakfast is posted outside of Mr. Burstein's office. All students are loading buses by alpha; there will be no changing buses.

Holiday Outreach 2014: a simple way to give back to the CP community
Each year the College Park PTSA organizes a "Holiday Outreach" program for those College Park families in need of extra help. Our plan is to provide each of these families with a Target gift card to assist in making their holidays special. Any donation amount will make a difference to these Falcon families.
  • To make a donation online
Select this link for the PTSA webstore. Go to Donation, then select Holiday Outreach and make a donation.
  • To make a donation by check
Please make check payable to CPHS/PTSA and write "Holiday Outreach" on the memo line of your check. You or your child can drop it off in the main office or you can mail it to: College Park PTSA/Holiday Outreach, 201 Viking Drive, Pleasant Hill, CA 94523
All donations are tax deductible and we would like to receive them by Friday, December 12 to be distributed before the holiday season. (Donations received after the holiday break will support our year round CP Outreach Program helping students in need. Donations for this program are accepted year round.)

Girl's tennis success
Congratulations to Maddie Winterich and Kayla Southwick who went to NCS for girl's tennis. This is the first time in 18 years College Park has gone to NCS for girl's tennis. Way to go girls!

CP athletes sign letters of intent

The NCAA National Letter of Intent Early Signing Period was the week of Nov. 12-19. This is the first time student athletes who have verbally committed to play a sport in college can sign their National Letters of Intent for the 2015-16 school year. College Park recently honored eight such student athletes at two separate events.

On Thurs., Nov. 13 a lunch time event was held geared toward the student body. Put on by the Sports Leadership class, it was a high energy "Draft Day" type rally, celebrating the athletes' accomplishments in their sport and in the classroom.

A more formal ceremony was held on Monday evening, Nov. 17 for the families, friends and former coaches of the athletes.  The lone swimmer and seven baseball players were introduced with their parents while short bios were read.  After the ceremony, cameras were flashing during a photo session of the athletes. Click here to read the bios of these players.

College Park is proud of the many accomplishments of these student athletes and is looking forward to celebrating the next group during the regular NCAA signing period in April, 2015.

Tips for letters of recommendation & financial aid
Now that you are almost done with UC/CSU apps, many of you will be turning to your private school applications. Remember the Common App must be matched with your Family Connection Account (https://connection.naviance.com/collegeph).
That is also where you will request recommendations from your teachers (ask them in person first). If you want a recommendation from Mrs. Welsh, fill out a brag sheet (available on the Career Center web site), attach any college essays and short responses you have written, give the packet of information to Mrs. Welsh and schedule an interview. Please allow at least 2 weeks between the interview and the submission of the recommendation.
Financial Aid  The financial aid process starts in January so don't worry about filling in forms just yet. Mrs. Welsh will be giving presentations to all seniors in December in their Gov/Econ classes.
CalGrant GPA verifications are submitted electronically by the District, so there is no need to fill out the paper form UNLESS the name on your social security card DIFFERS from the name on your high school transcript. If there is any difference at all you should see Mrs. Welsh for a paper GPA verification form, which must be mailed to the California Student Aid Commission by March 2 (obtain proof of mailing from the post office).

Summer science internship
The Arthritis Foundation will begin accepting applications on Dec. 1, 2014 for our 2015 Summer Science Internship program. Interns receive hands-on experience in the fields of rheumatology and immunology.
Students can learn more about the internship and apply at www.SummerScienceInternship.kintera.org. Additional information can be found on our website: http://www.arthritis.org/northern-california/.
