Message from the Principal

Message From the Principal

The letter below is a proactive alert message to parents from the Student Resource Police Officer that serves Northgate High School. I have inserted College Park in place of Northgate High School as we have also observed this trend with students abusing prescription drugs and believe this message is important.

Thank you,

Paul Gengler

Dear College Park Parents/Guardians,

I wanted to take a moment to reach out to the College Park community regarding an alarming trend I, and the administration, are seeing among our students: the use of XANAX.

It is widely known that alcohol and marijuana are the two most traditionally abused substances by youth. However, in law enforcement we find that there is often a third abused substance that becomes popular. This third substance is ever changing. This year it happens to be Xanax, a drug used to treat anxiety and panic disorders.

So, please know these few things about XANAX:

  • Xanax is a drug in the benzodiazepine family (others include Valium, Librium, and Restoril).
  • Like many addictive substances, when the drug level falls below a certain threshold, addiction symptoms begin to appear and another dose must be taken to return to 'normal'.
  • Xanax is sometimes taken by some with the intent on getting the relaxed state it produces. This is especially dangerous when it is taken in combination with alcohol or opiates to get a more intense 'high'. Combining Benzodiazepines like Xanax with alcohol has led to deaths from respiratory depression.
  • In some cases, Xanax has been used as a "date rape drug". This is because it has a relatively sudden onset (1 - 2 hours), has stronger effects when mixed with alcohol, and has a side effect of memory loss.
  • A person on Xanax may appear like someone who is "drunk". They may, for example, present as drowsy, have dizziness, insomnia, memory problems, poor balance or coordination, slurred speech, trouble concentrating, and irritability.

Among the most powerful deterrents to drug use of any kind is effective communication. Don't hesitate to have discussions with your kids about this and other issues. Communication builds trust. Trust builds solid foundations. Solid foundations support good choices.

Thank you for reading.

Be safe

Officer Raquel
