Chevron scholarship deadline is January 2
There is a typo on some parts of the application: the deadline is Fri., Jan. 2. Applications can be found in the Scholarship Binder and on the Career Center website
The scholarship is based 60%  essay; 20% leadership; 20% community involvement. There are seven awards ranging from $500 - $5,000. Please take some time over Winter Break and craft a 500-750 word essay in which you "describe a recent event (within the last three years) that would not have occurred without the influence of Black life, history and culture over the last 100 years, and why it's important to you."
Applications are welcome from any high school senior.
Remember, you have a much greater chance of winning scholarships at the local than the national level. Good luck!

Hello amazing bakers!

I'm sending you this message on behalf of College Park High School Boosters Crab Feed Committee.

The annual Crab Feed/Auction will take place on Sat., Jan. 31 at the newly-remodeled Pleasant Hill Community Center. I am in charge of the dessert auction for the event. I'm reaching out to all the school's bakers and asking for dessert donations to auction.

We aren't greedy and will take anything you are willing to donate. I prefer the desserts be delivered to the Pleasant Hill Community Center on the day of the event between 11:00am-2:00pm, but if that's not possible, we can make a plan for you to drop off the item at my house.

If you can help with a donation, please email me at queen_be1@comcast.net and let me know what item you will be donating.

This is our 25th anniversary so we would like to emphasis that we want all dessert presentations to look elegant and classy. Many thanks, Brenda Teixeira (925 787 0531)

Submit your work to CP's magazine
Are you an undiscovered artist? A secret poet? An aspiring short-story writer?

Submit your artwork, poetry, short stories, photography, or opinion pieces to your English or Art teacher or email them to cpyouthink@gmail.com. You could be published in the school magazine.

All submissions are due by Jan. 31, so don't wait!

Financial aid reminders
All seniors have now suffered through two hours of presentations on financial aid. Please be sure to submit the FAFSA form well before the Mar. 2 deadline. Using estimated 2014 income data is perfectly acceptable. However, those who use estimated tax data  should  be prepared to log back into their FAFSA accounts approximately three weeks after tax returns have been filed with the IRS and use the IRS Data Retrieval tool to update and verify income data.
Cal Grant GPA Verification
There is no need to submit a paper Cal Grant GPA Verification Form (available from the Career Center) UNLESS the name on your transcript is different from the name on your social security card. The District will electronically send all senior GPAs to the California Student Aid Commission. You must submit your FAFSA form (& your GPA Verification form if necessary) by Mar. 2 to be considered for Cal Grant.
Not entitled to a Social Security number? See Mrs. Welsh in the Career Center to see if the California Dream Act will give you access to Cal Grant, other state funding and institutional grants.

Summer programs
Now is the time colleges and universities start advertising their summer enrichment programs for high school students. The UCs have a range of options from individual classes, through summer research programs like UC Davis' Young Scholar Program, to multiple campus programs like COSMOS.
These enrichment opportunities can be a very rewarding (and expensive) way to spend the summer. Please be aware that financial aid is often available from host institutions on a need-based basis. Ms. Welsh recommends applying early if you think you might qualify for aid. Please note that a subject program at a big name school does not carry more weight on college applications than that same course at community college. For example: a student will get the same college credit for a college-level European History course at Stanford as they would for an equivalent history class at DVC.
